What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is the latest and fastest growing internet malware. Like all viruses it gains access through security failings in networks and software, or tricks users to install it through a download hidden in a web page or links in an email.
Disguising itself as a legitimate file it has been particularly effective, which has led security experts to warn British businesses to be extra diligent and ensure they have a monitored, working cloud backup.
If infected, all system data is encrypted and held hostage until the user agrees to pay the proposed ransom through BitCoin or other hard to trace online payment methods.
These ransoms can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over tens of thousands of dollars!
Despite best efforts to recover by performing system resets, flashing BIOS or installing new hard drives, all the user sees is an on-screen ransom note telling them how much they need to pay to regain access before their data is permanently deleted.
The thought that if business critical data is stored within a cloud service like Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox that it will be safe. Unfortunately, this is not the case as ransomware sees them as network drives and encrypts them as well. Then the encryption is immediately synced across all users.
These attacks target organisations big or small as well as multiple platforms, including both Mac and PC operating systems. Some recent examples of ransomware include CryptoLocker, Cryptowall, Lockey and KeRanger.
How can you survive?
A priority for survival has to be the implementation of a Datahive™ Cloud Backup solution.
Since the significant emergence in 2011 of viruses categorised as ransomware, Datahive™ has, on a weekly basis helped infected business customers, successfully restore their critical data, whilst importantly ensuring they do not pay a ransom.
These ransoms can range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over tens of thousands of dollars!
In the past the writers of malware were occasionally careless and there was often a way to recover the encrypted files. However, they have improved both their delivery methods and capabilities to such a point that keeping them out is tough ask and data retrieval is usually no longer a possibility.
