At Vitanium we really value our relationship with Veeam and have been part of their Veeam Cloud & Service Provider (VCSP) program for nearly half a decade. Since the beginning of the year we have seen a large uptake in partners interested in Veeam Cloud Connect Backup. It’s not surprising! More and more partners are recognising the simplicity and low cost of adding an off-site component to their customers backup strategy, backed by a Global Leader in Data Protection.
We have just brought on line another 200TB’s of storage to meet this demand but we wanted to draw your attention to a Veeam feature called Fast Clone and why you want to partner with a Cloud Connect provider that supports it. Veeam utilises Fast Clone to increase the speed of synthetic backup creation and transformation, reduce disk space requirements and decrease the load on storage devices.
Fast clone does this by using the underlying file systems (xfs or ReFS) API to create synthetic backups without moving the data blocks between files, and instead, references backup file blocks already present on the volume. This means all manipulations associated with synthetic full backups are limited to metadata updates and require no actual I/O operations on backed up data.
This results in significant advantages for Veeam Cloud Connect customers including faster merges, reduced storage requirements and smaller backup windows.
Our new repositories are all Fast Clone enabled and you can read more about this exciting technology here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/backup_repository_block_cloning.html?ver=100
If you haven’t already, we recommend you check requirements and ensure your local repositories are configured to use fast clone as well.
