How to Use ObjectHive with Veeam for Immutable Backups

If you’re looking for secure, reliable long-term backup storage, Vitanium’s ObjectHive is fully compatible with Veeam and can be used as an immutable repository.

Whether you’re using it as a primary destination or part of a Scale-Out Backup Repository, ObjectHive gives you flexibility, ransomware protection and simple setup, all without the need for complex infrastructure.

Let’s break it down.

Two Ways to Use ObjectHive with Veeam

1. As a Primary Repository

With Veeam v12, you can now back up directly to object storage, including ObjectHive. This works for both standard backup jobs and backup copy jobs.

2. As Part of a Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR)

You can also use ObjectHive as the capacity tier. For example:

  • Use a local disk as the performance tier
  • Set ObjectHive as the capacity tier

From there, you can:

  • Copy backups to ObjectHive immediately after creation
  • Move backups to ObjectHive as they age out of the performance tier

Either way, data lands in an immutable ObjectHive bucket, ready for long-term archiving.

What Makes It Immutable?

When you create the bucket, you define an immutability period, such as 30 days. Within this window, no one (not even admins) can modify or delete the backup files. Any attempts to do so will trigger an error.

This adds an extra layer of protection against ransomware, accidental deletion or insider threats.

🛠️ How to Add ObjectHive to Veeam

Once your ObjectHive bucket is ready, you’ll need to configure it within Veeam. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Backup Infrastructure view.
  2. In the inventory pane, right-click the Backup Repositories node and select Add Backup Repository. Alternatively, you can click Add Repository on the ribbon.
  3. In the Add Backup Repository window, select Object storage > S3 Compatible > S3 Compatible.
  1. Specify a suitable name for the repository
  2. On the account tab enter the details you will have received when you made the order
  3. Select the bucket and subfolder to send your backups to. On this bucket tab, you can set your period of immutability. (Once set this cannot be turned off or lowered)

Ready to Go

Once ObjectHive is added, you can point your backup jobs to it directly, or plug it into an existing Scale-Out Backup Repository. Learn more about SOBR setup here: Veeam SOBR Setup Guide
