SaaS suites like Microsoft Office 365 and Google G Suite are growing in popularity all the time, especially with more people working from home more often. At the start of this year there were already over 200 million active users every month on O365 and G Suite was peaking over 6 million active users. Surprisingly, only around a third of SMEs are backing up their SaaS data using a third-party solution.
The issue here is that companies are often under the misconception that their data is protected with these third-party suites just because the data is in the cloud or that backup and recovery would be provided by the vendor. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
In fact, you can even see this from Microsoft themselves with their “shared responsibility” model. Their job is to keep the infrastructure running, not to backup your data. Essentially, they are saying “We have no responsibility” when it comes to keeping your data protected.
Another interesting thing to note is that even though O365’s responsibility is on keeping the infrastructure running, they have had hours and hours of downtime at a time, affecting millions across the world over the past few months. It has gotten so bad that many O365 users are jokingly referring to it as O354! Their SLAs specifically note that downtime should be under 44 minutes per month, which they are definitely not hitting at the moment. Another reason not to have all of your data in one place.
How can you lose data in the cloud?
There are so many ways data can still be lost when it is in the cloud and not backed up. To name just a few:
- User error – Mistakenly deleting or overwriting files and folders
- Malware, ransomware and other cyberattacks – Locking you out of your content or even just deleting it altogether.
- Malicious insiders – Am employee looking to cause harm to a company, either with that intent from the start, becoming disgruntled, or even being bribed or threatened by outside sources.
What can we do about it?
Vitanium recommend cloud-to-cloud backup to keep your SaaS data safe. This is just as easy as normal backup from your pc to the cloud, except perhaps even easier as it does not take up any resources or time from your local machines as it is all handled in the cloud.
Vitanium’s cloud to cloud backup is a perfect solution for backing up data from any cloud source, such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Sharepoint and many more.
